Oscar Movie Food 2008

We have a few challenges this year coming up with food associated with the Best Picture nominees. I did a bit of research and have come up with a few suggestions, the next few blogs will review my thoughts on food options for the Oscar party. Send me your own suggestions, we can use all the help!

Juno movie food

This is probably the easiest movie for food. For one thing, she uses a hamburger phone and her boyfriend always has orange tick-tacks on hand. I found some tasty quotes from the movie that offer more suggestions.

Girl: Here, have a condom. They're boysenberry.
Juno: I'm actually off sex right now, thanks.
Girl: My boyfriend wears them every time we have intercourse. They make his junk smell like pie.

Mini-Boysenberry Pies sound like a fantastic party food. Either that or you could hand out flavored condoms as party favors.

Leah: How did you even generate enough pee for three pregnancy tests? That's amazing...
Juno: I don't know, I drank like, ten tons of Sunny D.

The beginning of the movie you see Juno with an enormous jug of Sunny D. Surly there is a cocktail you could make out of Sunny D?

"I could so go for like a huge cookie right now, with like, a lamb kabob simultaneously." --Juno

This is an interesting combination of food. Huge cookies are easy; lamb kabobs are not. But what if you had a skewer, even a little cocktail skewer, that contained dinner and dessert? Stick on a few cookie morsels, a cucumber, and a few bits of lamb. Mmmmm... sounds like just what the pregnant girl ordered!

"As far as boyfriends go, Paulie Bleeker is totally boss. He is the cheese to my macaroni." --Juno

Mac and Cheese! Who doesn't love it?

There Will Be Blood movie food

There are three quotes from this movie that, together, sum up who Daniel Plainview is, he says each of them:

"I have a competition in me. I want no one else to succeed."
"What's this? Why don't I own this? Why don't I own this?"
"Now run along and play, and don't come back."

This movie is about a very driven oil man. Combined with the baguettes from Michael Clayton you could make an oil and vinegar bread dip.

Plainview and his son go hunting for quail and eat potatoes and goat's milk. At one time Plainview pours some whiskey into a glass of goats milk and has his son drink it. I'm not sure how that would taste... pretty awful I would imagine.

There Will Be Bloody Marys would be a good cocktail. Milk shakes, whiskey (separately) would both make great beverages for this movie; especially if the milk used is from a goat.

Atonement movie food

There are just a couple of food items in this movie. The most memorable for me is the chocolate martini and chocolate bar that Paul serves. Devil's Food cupcakes would be appropriate for this movie as well.

During the movie is a dinner party where they serve beef wellington. However, that's a pretty hefty dish for an Oscar party.

Wine and bread are shared with soldiers hiding out in a barn in France. But other than that, I can't recall much food.

No Country For Old Men movie food

I have to share one of my favorite quotes from this movie because it makes me chuckle, it has nothing to do with food. Llewelyn is leaving to take some water to a dying man...

Llewelyn: If I don't come back, tell mother I love her.
Carla Jean: Your mother's dead, Llewelyn.
Llewelyn: (pauses) Well then I'll tell her myself.

This movie has undertones of hiding, chasing and, of course, blood and guts. One thought is to make cupcakes and bake a quarter inside (wrap it in foil first). The quarter is "hidden" and is reminiscent of the scene that ends with this line:

Anton: Don't put it in your pocket, sir. Don't put it in your pocket. It's your lucky quarter.

We could stock Corona at the party. Llewelyn borrows a Corona from the young Americans to help get him by the border guard.

But, the only real food in the movie is expressed in this exchange:
Sheriff Bell: Now that's aggrevatin'.
Wendell: Sheriff?
Sheriff Bell: [points to a bottle of milk] Still sweatin'.
Wendell: Whoa, Sheriff! We just missed him! We gotta circulate this!
Sheriff Bell: Well, okay. What do we circulate? Lookin' for a man who recently drunk milk?

Michael Clayton movie food

MICHAEL: Making a delivery?
ARTHUR: No... (smiling) Very funny. Nothing like that... (as if it were all completely natural and needed no further explanation--) Have one...go on...really... (offering)
It’s still warm. Best bread I've ever had in my life.

About the only food you could have for this one is baguettes. There is a scene where Arthur's refrigerator is opened and inside is a bottle of Dom Perignon and two glasses and about 15 containers of orange jell-o.

Nominated Shorts

Sunday we'll be watching all the "shorts" that are nominated for an Oscar. These little films are the most enigmatic of all the nominees. Who makes them? Why? and exactly how short is short? Could I make one? Where are they shown? We may not learn everything there is to know about the Shorts but we will have seen them all; which should at least help us fill out our Oscar ballet. I'm very happy that Omaha has Film Streams at The Ruth Sokolof Theater.

For reviews of the Shorts, The New York Times has a review of all of them that are nominated.

Enjoy!

Writer's Strike Over

The writer's strike is finally over! The agreement was reached today and still needs to be approved, but perhaps the Oscar's will have a writer after all!

I do wonder how the show will turn out with just a few weeks to prepare! The party should be fun, fun, fun!!
